For the first time since its 2002 theatrical release THE COCKETTES will be screening in glorious 35mm in New York. The Sunshine Cinemas will be presenting two midnight screenings ??? Friday November 21, and Saturday November 22.
Winner of the LA Film Critics Award for Best Documentary of 2002, THE COCKETTES recounts the wild history of the legendary San Francisco theatrical troupe of hippies and drag queens 1969 ??? 1972. As John Waters says in the film, ???They were hippie acid-freak drag queens, which was really new at the time ??? it still would be new!???
THE COCKETTES has been cited as an inspiration by artists ranging from Antony (Antony and the Johnsons) to Devendra Banhart, Justin Bond to Natasha Khan (Bat for Lashes); designers Marc Jacobs and John Galliano have both designed collections inspired by the film. A major exhibition on The Cockettes took place last year in Oslo, and Italian Vogue featured a major spread by photographer Steven Meisel inspired by the film. THE COCKETTES was recently featured in fashion maven Diane Pernet???s A SHADED VIEW ON FASHION FILM FESTIVAL at the Jeu de Paume in Paris.
Directed by Bill Weber and David Weissman, THE COCKETTES premiered at Sundance in 2002, was released theatrically later that year, and subsequently had a broadcast run on the Sundance Channel and LOGO.
"THE COCKETTES captures the anarchic, freewheeling spirit of San Francisco in the late '60s-early '70's better than any film I've ever seen." --Todd McCarthy, Daily Variety
"An exuberant journey into a barely remembered corner of the psychedelic '60s??? -- David Ansen, Newsweek.com
???This is one of those rare docs that paints a grand picture of an era and makes the journey feel like a party. One moment I was laughing my ass off and the next moment I was in tears. Witnessing the creative anarchy of the subjects of ???The Cockettes??? is pure joy. -- Chris Gore, Film Threat
